Everybody Lies
Everybody lies a little
But that don’t make it alright.
We lie about our age, our past, our fortune and our wage.
We lie on resumes and what we do.
How much we get paid or who we know or who we’ve laid
Or who we’ve seen on planes or sat next to in school.
To children and to spouses, or to people buying houses
Or cars or little things out in the yard.
To relatives and friends or those we’ll never see again:
Tthe priest, policeman, clients, clerks and crossing guards.
We lie about our best or telling stories we digress
And add embellishments even when it’s true.
About the fears, about the dreams, at morning, night, and in-between
You lie to me. I lie to you.
We lie when we confess our sin, or justify our motivations
With something. We lie about our lies.
We lie about our innocence, virginity, religiousness.
Is it all deception til we die? |
